Italy and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia sign agreement on financing of a health infrastructures enhancing project.

Italy and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia signed today a financing agreement on a project entitled “Soft Loan for Strengthening Health Infrastructure”. The project, which is funded and acknowledged by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, will be implemented in Addis Ababa, Amhara and Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region (SNNPR) in a period of 24 months and will have a budget of 5.000.000 Euros.

H.E. Ato Admasu Nebebe, State Minister of MoFEC, after the signing of the Agreement, has expressed his pleasant for the signing of the Agreement in which it has an add value for the solving of health infrastructures problems in the respective implementing regions.

Ms. Ginevra Letizia, head of the Addis Ababa Office of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation stated that “The priorities of this ambitious Programme were selected on the basis of the prevalent health issues in Ethiopia, and on the National Strategic Plan according to the principles of national ownership and mutual accountability”.

 

H.E. Giuseppe Mistretta, Ambassador of Italy to Ethiopia declared that “Through the signature of this Agreement, the collaboration between Italy and Ethiopia in the field of health becomes even more effective and stronger, specifically to increase the coverage and improve the quality of preventive and curative health services”.

The project will implement strategic activities for the improvement of health services in order to increase coverage, reduce morbidity, mortality and disability through the provision of a sustainable water supply and waste water system in 61 health centres.

It is expected that the project will seek to create maps of water supply to the health centres and a database on water availability in the health centres. The project will also aim at standardizing method for health centres on water collection, distribution and waste water management. At the end of the project 61 health centres will have an independent water supply scheme and waste water system.

MOFEC, the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia, the Directorate General for Development Cooperation of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, thorough its Addis Ababa office will be involved in the implementation of the project.
